A
few years ago, I began working with a new coach. As we began my new journey, my
coach assigned me a rather unusual homework task. The assignment: write my own
obituary. A thousand thoughts went through my mind. At first, I felt a mix of
discomfort and reluctance. I questioned the purpose and value of such an
assignment, wondering how confronting my mortality could possibly help me
navigate my future success.
However,
I decided to trust the process and set aside a quiet evening to begin writing.
Starting
the assignment was not easy. I tried writing it by hand and then moved to my
computer. Somehow, the idea of writing my own obituary felt morbid and
intimidating. I was forced to think about the end of my life, something that
many of us try to avoid. Sure it’s a thought every time I go to a funeral, but
it’s not something I think about on a regular bases.
Despite
the initial fear, I pushed through and began to reflect on my life,
achievements, and the legacy I wanted to leave behind. Reflecting on my life
and my achievements was the easy part because of the work I have done on My God
Resume. Where I struggled most was my legacy. Little did I know, this exercise
would become one of the most transformative experiences of my life and my
business.
As
I wrote, I started to see my life from a new perspective. I began to realize
what truly mattered to me. This exercise forced me to strip away the
superficial and focus on the core values and life goals that defined me. I saw
the gaps between my current life and the legacy I wanted to create. It was a
wake-up call, highlighting the areas where I was falling short and the aspects
of my life that needed more attention.
The
process of writing my obituary brought a profound clarity that I had not
anticipated. I discovered that many of my daily activities were not aligned
with my deepest values and aspirations. This realization was both humbling and
motivating. I understood that if I wanted to be remembered for the qualities
and achievements I was writing about, I needed to make significant changes in
my life.
With
newfound clarity, I began to set new, meaningful goals based on the insights
from my obituary exercise. I implemented daily practices to align my actions
with my desired legacy. This included focusing more on my relationships,
investing time in my passions, and committing to personal growth. I also made a
point to regularly revisit and revise my goals to stay on track.
What
was most effective was the long term impact writing my obituary had on my life.
It influenced my personal and professional decisions, guiding me toward a more
intentional and fulfilling existence. I felt a renewed sense of purpose and
direction, grounded in a deeper understanding of what I wanted my life to stand
for.
Because
of this experience, I encourage my clients to embrace sometimes difficult and
uncomfortable homework assignments. While it may seem daunting, the process of
self-reflection and confronting one’s own mortality can lead to profound
personal growth and transformation. Writing my own obituary was a powerful
exercise that helped me realign my life with my true values and aspirations.
In
my own coaching and counseling practice I also assign homework assignments to
my clients. In the realms of coaching and counseling, the time spent in
sessions is invaluable. However, the true transformation often happens between
meetings. Assigning homework to clients is one of the most effective strategies
to help them achieve their goals and sustain their progress. Here’s why:
1. Reinforcement of Learning - Homework serves as an extension of the
counseling or coaching session. It reinforces the concepts discussed and allows
clients to apply new strategies in real-world situations. By practicing these
skills outside the sessions, clients can solidify their understanding and
enhance their ability to utilize them effectively.
2. Encourages Self-Reflection - Assignments encourage clients to reflect
on their thoughts, behaviors, and emotions. This introspection is crucial for
personal growth and self-awareness. Writing exercises, journaling, or even
mindful meditation can help clients gain insights into their patterns and
triggers, fostering deeper understanding and lasting change.
3. Promotes Accountability - When clients have tasks to complete,
they become more accountable for their progress. Knowing they need to report
back on their homework motivates them to stay engaged and committed. This
accountability can significantly boost their dedication to achieving their
goals.
4. Facilitates Continuous Progress - Regular homework ensures that
progress is continuous rather than sporadic. Clients can work on their issues
consistently, which is vital for overcoming challenges and achieving long-term
success. This steady progress helps build momentum and keeps clients motivated.
5. Empowers Clients - Assignments empower clients by giving
them tools and strategies they can use independently. This empowerment fosters
a sense of confidence, helping clients feel more in control of their lives.
Over time, clients become less reliant on their coach or counselor and more
adept at managing their own issues.
6. Encourages Skill Development - Many goals require the development of
new skills. Homework provides clients with the opportunity to practice and hone
these skills in a supportive and structured way. Whether it’s communication
techniques, coping strategies, or goal-setting skills, clients can develop and
refine these abilities through regular practice.
7. Provides Measurable Progress - Assignments give both the coach or
counselor and the client tangible measures of progress. By reviewing homework,
practitioners can assess what is working and what might need adjustment. This
feedback loop is crucial for making informed decisions about the direction of
future sessions.
Incorporating
homework into your practice is not just about assigning tasks; it’s about
creating a dynamic and interactive process that supports your clients every
step of the way. Whether you’re a coach or a counselor, leveraging homework can
transform your sessions and help your clients reach their full potential.
