Did
I ever tell you I won an award basically for the most improved videos? It’s
quite a funny story. When I first started working with a coach to build my
signature coaching program, one of many challenges was to do a live video on
Facebook. The thought of doing this had
my hands and knees shaking beyond control. I put it off for a little while and
my coach continued to encourage me to “just do it afraid and get it done.”
At
first, I decided I would pre-record. Pre-recording would give me the confidence
that If I messed up, I could just re-do it. However deep in my heart I knew
that I would do tons of retakes trying to achieve a perfect video. I was going
to have to trust the process and take
the advice of my coach and other accountability partners who had done videos
and not only survived but were successful. Sigh.
Several
days later or it was probably a month, I made up in my mind to get it over
with. I wrote out a speech, practiced it and made myself a stack of index cards
with notes to keep me on track. Truth be told, I put my notes on index cards
because the cards would not shake and rattle revealing my nervousness like an 8
½ x 11 piece of paper. Sigh.
It
was a Saturday morning and I was preparing to go live at noon. To keep myself
from chickening out, I put a post on my FB page that I was going live at noon. I
pulled out my iPad and started setting things up. I was still fearful of doing
a headshot video so I decided to set up a waist up video on the stairway. Everything
was set up and ready to go. I opened up the FB app and pushed the button to go
live.
The
technology worked perfectly. I could see myself and no one could see my shaking
hands flipping the notecards. People started joining in with lots of ‘thumbs up’
and floating hearts. My confidence grew as I recognized familiar name with
supportive comments. I even got a few “amen” comments which really helped to
get through it. Ten to fifteen minutes
later it was over and I thought to myself, “That wasn’t so bad after all.” I finally
breathed and congratulated myself on doing it afraid.
Later
that day I finally got the courage to go back and look at the video. I noticed
it had been viewed by many more people than I would have ever thought. Wow,
that many people wanted to hear what I had to say. So imagine my surprise to
discover that the whole video was filmed sideways! Oh no! Was it a glitch in
the replay? What in the world happened? There was nothing wrong with the
technology, I had videotaped the whole thing sideways. Little did I realize
that I needed to turn my iPad vertically rather than horizontally. Oh no! I was
going to be the laughing stock of FB world! I was never going to do another FB
video again! I wanted to crawl under a rock and give up on my dream. Sigh.
It
took my husband, my coach, and the comments of others to calm me down and
remind me that I had to start somewhere. I can’t tell you how many people
encouraged me about the content and never said anything about the video being
sideways. In fact when someone did finally mention it being sideways, they
informed me that it was the reason they stopped to watch it. My blooper in the
long run turned out to be a blessing!
Back
to the award. Two years later at an event, my coach gave me an award mentioning
how far I had come creating high quality videos from my very first one. Since 2018
I have done probably over 300 videos. Not all of them have been perfect, but
they were done. Learning from my own mistakes has helped me to be able to coach
others on how easy it can be to create high quality videos to share with their current
and prospective clients. Ask any guest who has appeared on my weekly “Asking for a Sister Friend”
show, and they will tell you I shared with them about the time I literally
choked on water while doing a live video.
Many
of my videos have been live but I have a library of videos created specifically
for my coaching programs, courses and even for my counseling services. Most are
stored on my YouTube
Channel while others are stored in Pearls Perfected Institute. What I have learned over the years is that
videos have emerged as a powerful tool for education and training. Even in my
career as a learning and development leader I experienced how videos can be
incredibly helpful to enhance learning methods.
Here's
why videos can be incredibly helpful in teaching clients and why every coach,
counselor, and mental health and wellness professional should consider
incorporating them into their training toolkit.
1.
Enhanced
Engagement and Retention
Videos are inherently more engaging than
text. They combine visual and auditory elements, which can help to capture and
hold the viewer's attention. Studies have shown that people retain information
better when it's presented in a multimedia format. For you, this means that
clients are more likely to remember and apply what they learn from videos
compared to other forms of content.
2.
Flexibility and Convenience
One
of the biggest advantages of videos is their flexibility. Clients can watch
videos at their own pace and on their own schedule. This is particularly
beneficial for those who have busy lifestyles and may not have the time to
attend live sessions. With videos, clients can pause, rewind, and rewatch
content as needed, ensuring they fully understand the material before moving
on.
3.
Demonstration and Visualization
Videos
are perfect for demonstrating complex concepts or techniques. As a coach, counselor,
or service professional you can show step-by-step processes, provide visual
examples, and use animations to clarify difficult topics. This is especially
useful in fields that require practical skills, such as fitness training,
cooking, or technical tutorials.
4.
Personal Connection and Credibility
Videos
allow you to establish a personal connection with clients. Seeing and hearing you
creates a sense of familiarity and
trust, which can enhance the coaching/counseling relationship. Additionally, videos can help to
establish credibility. When clients see you confidently presenting information, it
reinforces your expertise and professionalism.
5.
Scalability and Reach
Creating
videos enables you to reach a larger audience. Unlike one-on-one sessions,
which are limited by time and availability, videos can be shared with thousands
of clients simultaneously. This scalability makes it possible for you to grow
their business and impact more people without increasing their workload
proportionally.
6.
Consistency and Quality Control
With
videos, you can ensure that every client receives the same high-quality
instruction. Live sessions can vary based on factors like your energy level, client
interactions, and environmental conditions. Videos, on the other hand, can be
carefully crafted, edited, and refined to deliver a consistent and polished
message every time.
7.
Cost-Effectiveness
While
there may be an initial investment in creating high-quality videos, the
long-term benefits far outweigh the costs. Once a video is produced, it can be
used repeatedly without any additional effort. This makes videos a
cost-effective way to provide ongoing education and support to clients.
8. Supplementary Material
Videos
can serve as excellent supplementary material to your live sessions. You can
create a library of videos that clients can access to reinforce what they've
learned in one-on-one or group sessions. This can enhance the overall learning
experience and provide clients with valuable resources they can refer to at any
time.
Incorporating
videos into your coaching practice can revolutionize the way you teach and
interact with your clients. They offer a multitude of benefits, from enhanced
engagement and retention to scalability and cost-effectiveness. By leveraging
the power of videos, coaches can provide a richer, more flexible, and more
impactful learning experience for their clients.
