If are like millions of Americans,
you found yourself watching the Superbowl game on Sunday night between the
Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. As a Chiefs fan, oh well, we didn’t
quite get the results we hoped for. In fact it was downright painful to watch
the game as the Eagles scored touchdown after touchdown and stopped our efforts
to move down the field. We will do better next time.
I may as well come clean and
mention that I am not really a football fan. However, I am a Superbowl fan. I
love the excitement of the big game, the commercials and just overall people watching.
I love seeing the reactions from the players, the player’s families, the fans,
and the coaches, not to mention watching my husband’s responses. I even checked
in on Facebook to see what others were saying. Then of course there was the
half time show. This Superbowl game gave me much to ponder and I got a few lessons
that directly apply to how I help others to share what they know so others can
grow.
As I watched the Super Bowl, one of
the things that stood out to me the most wasn’t just the action on the field—it
was the players standing on the sidelines, eyes locked on the game, bodies
tense with anticipation. They were waiting. Waiting for the moment when they
could get into the game. Waiting for the opportunity to showcase their talent.
They had trained for this. They had prepared for this. And yet, until the coach
called them in, all they could do was wait.
For so many professionals, content
creators, and educators, that same scenario plays out in real life. You have
the credentials. You have the skills. You have the experience. You may even
have the content. But somehow, you’re still on the sidelines, waiting for the
moment when someone calls your name and gives you permission to step onto the
field. The question is—why?
